Therefore, it is very important for you to avoid certain food items in your diet to get rid of constipation. Some foods that are blamed as constipation-causing foods include:

1. Alcohol

One of the most common causes of constipation is the frequent consumption of alcohol in larger amounts. Yes, you read that right! That glass of wine isn’t as innocent as it looks! If you wake up constipated and hungover, alcohol is to be blamed. Alcohol can negatively affect most of your vital body’s organs, especially your colon. High doses of alcohol lead to excessive dehydration. Since alcohol is dehydrating, it slows your digestion process and causes bowel irritation, ultimately causing constipation. Hence, it is advisable to consume it in moderation to minimise the constipating effects.

2. Fried Foods

Though it is no secret that fried foods are delicious, the love for fried foods may get you into big trouble. Not only fried foods like pizza, onion rings, burgers and french fries add extra kilograms to your body but these food items are tough to digest. The high amount of fat and salt in junk foods or junk foods is closely tied to severe health conditions, it should come as no surprise that these food items affect your gut health as well. Consuming fast foods can slow down the digestion process, making you feel constipated. If you are a die-hard fan of junk food items, consider replacing these items with their healthy versions.

3. Coffee

Coffee is not something that makes you feel constipated, but it can definitely increase the chances of it. Although we have all heard that the consumption of coffee can get bowels moving, sipping too much can be dehydrating! Coffee is the source of caffeine and caffeinated drinks are diuretic. Consumption of larger amounts of coffee will make you urinate more, thereby increasing the chance of dehydration. If you are a coffee lover and cannot function throughout the day without sipping coffee, make sure you are consuming an adequate amount of water to compensate.

4. Acidic Foods

Acidic foods are another main item in the list of common constipation causing foods. Certain citrus food items like oranges, lemons, and sweet lime are usually acidic in nature and cause irritation in the stomach lining.  They can further hinder the digestion process, acting as a trigger for constipation. You may not know but carbonated drinks can also cause abdominal pain, bloating and gastric problems. The key is to consume acidic foods and drinks in moderation keeping the body’s signals in mind.

5. Frozen Dinners

It is no secret that frozen meals are mouth-watering. Sadly, despite popularly known as convenience foods, these foods items are not going to do your digestive system any good. Most frozen dinners contain little or no fibre at all and excessive amounts of salt, preservatives and fat, which cause dehydration in the body. So, whether you call them ready meals, TV dinners, pre-packaged foods, or microwave meals – frozen dinners are bad for your gut. Such meals are pretty hard for your digestive system to process, hence slowing down the digestion process- ultimately resulting in mild to severe constipation.

Summing it all up!

Constipation is not only an unpleasant condition, but it can also be maddening! And, you should not let any condition disturb your mental peace.  So, if you are suffering from constipation, it is better to avoid these above-mentioned foods until your regular bowel movements are back on track.  Eat healthy, stay healthy!
